Kaduna 2023: Arewa Christian Youth Forum Disassociates from CAN, ECWA's Endorsement of Isah Ashiru

Kaduna State Chapter of the Arewa Christian Youth Forum (ACYF), have disassociated themselves from the Kaduna State Chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) over the faulty endorsement of the governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Hon. Isah Ashiru Kudan. 

Briefing journalists in Kaduna on Sunday evening, Comr. Elijah Danbaba Haruna insisted that “the church has no business aligning with a particular political party or candidate in a state were all Christians share diverse and different political opinion, interest and ideology.

The Christian community in Kaduna state must not allow anyone to use his or her position to deceive the church of God based on his or her own personal interest and ambition.

“We know the reasons why the leadership of Kaduna State CAN, the leadership of CAN has aligned itself with the PDP in Kaduna State, It is no news that the state CAN Chairman, Rev. Joseph Hayab, is a bonarfied card-carrying member of the PDP and a member of the PDP Gubernatorial Campaign Council, he is executing an assignment giving to him, –whereas in reward for a political appointment or a key portfolio if PDP is voted into power. 

As a group, we truly do not buy the excuse of saying that Ashiru is the right candidate in which the church should support. In fact, if it is for the interest of the Church, then Jonathan Asake of the Labour Party should have our undivided support because he is the only Christian amongst the top four contestants. 

Citing a verse from the Holy Scripture “wherever the righteous rule, the people rejoice”. Rev. Hayab and his group of pro PDP Pastors have underscored the entire imperative for people to elect their own leaders on the altar of sentiments, –to the favor of a person who personally endorsed/promoted the bill establishing sharia law in Kaduna state of which the implementation brought about the Sharia crises that led to the death of thousands of Christians in Kaduna.

We refuse to be driven into the faulty endorsement of Ashiru simply because of one’s personal interest. 

We hereby state clearly, as Kaduna State Chapter of the Arewa Christian Youth Forum; “Neither the PDP or any party is the direction of the Church. We call on all Christians to vote on the basis of competence, character and capacity to govern Kaduna State in the right direction.
