Kaduna: Massive Defections Hit PDP In Chikun Ahead State Assembly Re-run Election

As the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC),  plans to conduct bye-elections to fill the vacancy created following the unfortunate demise of the then Member-elect, Hon. Madami Garba Madami, the prospect of All Progressives Congress(APC) clinching the seat of State Assembly Member for the second time in Chikun Constituency is becoming brighter as Election Day draws nearer.

The emergence of Hon. Mariah Samuel Dogo as the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has triggered spontaneous defections of some big players from her party to the APC.

Notable defectors in the last Four days include:
I) Anthony Haruna, former Kakau Ward PDP Vice Chairman and a Senior stakeholder of the PDP.
ii) Hon. Joshua Umaru Kapiyo, Serving Supervisory Councillor, Agriculture to the Chairman Chikun LGA
iii) Hon. Richard John Kpedason, Kakau Ward Councillor
iv) Hon. Ishaku Ishaya, Duchi Yelwa Ward Councillor
v) Hon. Joshua Bawason, an associate of Hon. Yakubu Umar Barde, former House of Representatives Member.
vi) BaseTwo former legislative aide to Yakubu Umar Barde, as Special Adviser, Security Matters to the Chikun Local Government.

Others include: Alh. Tala Musa, Vice Chairman Chikun LGC; Hon. Dimka, Councilor Narayi Ward; Mrs Jummai Dorcas Victor, Council Secretary, Chikun LGC; Hon. Ibrahim Akawu, Supervisor Councilor on Agriculture; Hon. Danladi Wakili Barde, Councilor Chikun ward; Mrs Deborah Atung, former PDP women leader Kakau ward;

Most of the decampees attributed the propelling factor that influenced the decision to the people-centred policies of Governor Uba Sani's administration.

One of them noted that "Governor Sani's action of reducing school fees in the state-owned tertiary institutions, the massive employment of youth into the Kaduna State Vigilante Services (KADVIS), the free distribution of foodstuff and other palliatives like the end of month allowances to the youth and other indigent members of the society, have impacted positively on the lives of Kaduna people"

While other aggrieved members noted that the delegates that produced the candidate of the opposition party were imposed on the members of the party. They lamented that a party that has been in opposition since 2015, shouldn't be associated with anti-democratic practices.

As the people of Chikun constituency look forward to 3rd February 2024 to elect their representative, the rank of the APC keeps swelling while that of the opposition parties keeps shrinking like sun-dried bread.
