WHY THE ATTEMPTS TO DESECRATE THE AGE-OLD TRADITIONAL INSTITUTIONS IN NORTHERN NIGERIA MUST BE RESISTED...
By Mohammed Rabiu Bako : JULY 2ND, 2024
The recent actions taken by some Northern Governors in Nigeria towards traditional institutions are indeed concerning. These actions of the practical political recklessness, specifically by the Governors of Kano, Sokoto and now Katsina have now resulted to a new political epidemic: the attempt to desecrate the age-old traditional institutions that have historically defined the identity of the people.
These actions, such as the current turmoil in Kano state with the dethroning of Aminu Bayero and reappointment of Lamido Sanusi have resorted to embarrassing events in the Emirate. Furthermore, the developments in Sokoto that seeks to limit the age-long powers of the Sultan is yet again another insult to the traditional institution. This is not forgetting the recent query given to the Emir of Katsina by the state Governor... All these indicates that some Governors are heading in the wrong direction. It is important that these Governors be cautioned against destroying our traditional institutions that have stood for centuries.
Indeed, what cannot be overstated is the fact that traditional institutions hold immense historical and cultural value in our society. They provide a sense of identity, unity and continuity to the people. These institutions have weathered the test of time and have played crucial roles in our communities for generations. They serve as custodians of our traditions, customs and values.
The meddling of politics in these institution could have detrimental effects. It risks diluting the essence and integrity of the institution, thereby eroding their significance. It is evident that no Governor in the South ever dares to point fingers or think of dethroning the Oba of Benin Kingdom, the Alake of Igba-land, Olu of Ibadan, Ile Ife and others. This is because the position these kings occupy in society is very sacred, and as such, they are treated by their respective Governors and the people with utmost respect. More so, the kingship remains impartial and independent, focusing on their core responsibilities of societal cohesion and governance. Hence, preserving them should be a priority for any responsible government. Very important to note also is that, they play a vital role in maintaining stability, fostering cultural pride, and enhancing social harmony. Why is this different with the core North at this contemporary time?
Going forward, It is imperative for Politicians to exercise caution and refrain from using politics to manipulate or meddle with traditional institutions. Instead, they should seek to support and uphold these institution, recognizing their historical significance and the value they bring to our communities.
Lastly, much gratitude goes to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the federal government for their firm stance in ensuring that the Kano emirates and others are not basterdized. Immense gratitude also goes to the national assembly for the start of their hearing to separate traditional councils or institutions from the control of State Government.
God bless Nigeria!
